We're moving to Google Cloud on September 30

Sprinting toward the finish line
We launched the Calcapp beta early this year and have spent the entire year consistently improving the service. In June, we launched a major update with 244 formula functions, formatted numbers, a function browser, switches, text fields, date and time fields, reworked error handling and a brand new website. Our August release finally made it possible to share apps and to use them offline and improved the experience on Android devices. The September update added drop-down fields and hidden fields and fixed a large number of bugs.

Suppressing error values in shared apps
Have you ever created an app using Calcapp only to find that your app displays error values in red? These error values are there to help you diagnose formula errors, but look unprofessional in apps you distribute to end users. As such, error values won’t show up in shared apps once we release our October update.

Growth
When you’re busy creating apps in Calcapp Creator, the changes you make are constantly sent to our server for safekeeping. (Once every five seconds, in fact, meaning that you stand to lose at most five seconds of work if you, say, suffer a power outage.)

Feature: Back navigation on Android
Our next Calcapp release is taking shape and we’re hoping to release it in August. While the headline feature will be the ability to share apps with others, we have managed to add a few minor features as well.

The Calcapp survey
While Calcapp Creator has a few thousand users, getting feedback is always a challenge. We think that we have a pretty good idea of what we’ve gotten right so far and where we still fall short (as discussed in yesterday’s post), but the more feedback we get, the better the product gets. If you haven’t already, please take the Calcapp survey and help us improve.

More flexible layouts for your apps
The way the fields of your apps are laid out will change with our upcoming release. Field captions will no longer be limited to one row, and neither captions nor the fields themselves will be cut off arbitrarily. (The new release does away with trailing captions.)

Introducing Calcapp and our new website
Today we’re excited to launch a new website for Calcapp, which includes learning resources, this blog and an opportunity to sign up for our preview release. Our aim with Calcapp is to allow you to create calculator apps using the skills you’ve already honed when creating spreadsheets. Today, mobile devices are everywhere, and yet creating line-of-business apps for your company is expensive and time-consuming. We aim to change that.

Getting Calcapp Creator ready
The first preview version of Calcapp Creator is finally complete. There are some administrative tasks that need to be performed before we are ready to give our beta testers access to it, but it should not be long now. Since the last update, we have implemented the last of the features we had planned for the first preview release. This status update has more details on these new features.

Unveiling Calcapp Creator
The first preview version of Calcapp Creator is nearing completion. It will allow people to leverage their spreadsheet skills to build calculator apps for iPhone/iPad and Android devices, as well as Windows and Mac desktops and the open Web. The first preview version will only allow web apps to be built, though, and the feature set will be limited compared to what we hope to deliver in the future. Once we release the preview version, we need your help to guide us in the right direction, to help us prioritize features and ensure that we build a product that solves your problems and meets your requirements.
